The manufacturing industry often presses the importance of safety. For good reason, much of the tools and equipment, if used improperly, can present a hazard. Ensuring the safety of a facility’s employees should be at the front of every manufacturing company’s objectives.
Proper safety begins with a plan. Here are 4 simple things you can do to ensure the safety of your manufacturing facility:
1) Train your employees to be organized and clean.
There’s a saying, “a place for everything and everything in its place.” This mantra especially applies to maintaining an organized workspace. Moreover, if employees have to travel across the manufacturing floor for tools they regularly need to complete their jobs, that’s a sign of poor organizational planning. If your employees have what they need and the tools they need are organized and in their correct place, it creates a safer environment.
2) Routine Maintenance should be routine.
Ensuring your facility’s equipment is kept to the appropriate standard of function should be obvious; however the need to state this remains important.
3) Training employees to properly dispose of protective equipment.
If your facility requires the use of masks, gloves, or other disposable protective gear, are those items being properly disposed of? Are your employees rotating their protective gear frequently, so they’re not breathing through the same dirty mask for long periods of time.
4) Ensuring your facility is properly cleaned and disinfected frequently.
This is possibly the most overlooked step to ensuring a safe environment. By cleaning and disinfecting spaces, you’re ensuring that your employees remain healthy. Dust and other allergens in the facility’s ventilation system accounts for a lot of workplace illness, so a “simple” sweeping and occasional mopping of the floor is not enough to make sure your employees have an environment that promotes their health and wellbeing.
